On June 12, 2015, Monserrate Rodriguez a resident Life Care Center of Colorado Springs, Colorado, celebrated her 101st birthday with a party at the facility for her and her family.

Born in Yauco, Puerto Rico, in 1914, Rodriguez learned how to be a seamstress by watching her mother sew. She married Ramoncito Pagan when she was just 16, and she had her daughter when she was 17, her son a year later.

At 21 years old, Rodriguez and the family moved to New York. She has lived through the Great Depression, World War II and most of the major events of the 20th century. She lived in California during the 1960s-1980s before moving to Colorado.

When Rodriguez was asked for her best life advice, she shared, “Dwell on the good times, and forget the bad. Be positive!”

“Monserrate loves a good joke and telling stories of the past,” said Robert MacLennan, activity director at Life Care Center of Colorado Springs.
